Do I need to install capabilities if I use this and we want our authors to only be able to publish for review can we restrict them only to this level of ‘publishing’

@manakio2k PublishPress Capabilities and PublishPress Revisions can do this for you.

This tutorial has more details: https://publishpress.com/knowledge-base/revision-permissions-post-types/

“Edit Published: if this box is checked, users can edit published content and create revisions.
Publish: if this box is checked, users can make their changes live without moderation.”

Thanks, I actually installed revisions and like it however here’s what we would like to see…

We don’t even want our authors to be able to “publish”, only “publish pending review”.

We only want our editors to be able to approve content, can you send this request upstream?

Thank you for your timely reply, we’re going to purchase pro version as soon as we make sure everything works like we want it on our site!

    Thanks @manakio2k

Yes, all of that is possible with the combination of PublishPress Capabilities and PublishPress Revisions.

For example, with the authors, make sure the “Publish” column is unchecked:

We can’t, if you do that then authors do not have permission to add their social media accounts in JetPack for auto-posting to their social media ?? The better route would be to have a checkbox that say’s “Only Publish for Review” or something like that.

Thanks for your help so far!

Thanks @manakio2k. We do it this way to keep close to the WordPress core.

If you need to allow users access to add their social media accounts, perhaps there’s a permission or a workaround available in Jetpack.

If we could somehow make it so you could only submit your article for review (editors must approve all front end content) then we could make everyone an Author instead of keeping them at the contributor level. In theory that seems simple ??

    Plugin Author Steve Burge

    (@stevejburge)

@venturecore That is possible with the PublishPress Capabilities plugin and perhaps the Pending Review status https://publishpress.com/blog/pending-review-draft/

    Thread Starter VentureCore

    (@manakio2k)

So for example, if there was a way to set the default behavior of ‘Status’ to Pending Review with no ‘edit’ option on that field, that’s all that would be necessary.

    Does that make sense?

I mean, we COULD just hide the submit button via a script but if there was a better way of handling that I think it would be a great addition to your plugins

    Thread Starter VentureCore

    (@manakio2k)

but the pending review status does not apply to authors, only contributors

    Thread Starter VentureCore

    (@manakio2k)

If there was a way to apply the same behavior to authors without changing their permission set then that would solve our problem.

Thank you for taking the time to converse with me on this!

Hi @manakio2k. With the Pro versions of our plugins, it is possible to customize who has access to different statuses. This may help: https://publishpress.com/blog/editorial-workflow-contributors-authors-editors/

#3. Authors and Editors work on the story
This final stage is almost ready to go. Both Authors and Editors can log in and edit this post.

However, we do need to make one change to match the original request. We need to stop Authors from publishing posts. Click to see the default permissions for Authors.

Go to the “Capabilities” link in your WordPress admin menu.
    Choose the “Editor” role.
Uncheck the “Publish” box in the “Posts” row:

    _______

This is already possible in the free version but if you uncheck the publish box, the authors cannot use the WordPress Publicize feature. That’s our delemma

    (@stevejburge)

@manakio2k Understood. Perhaps there’s a permission or a workaround available in Jetpack. Perhaps an alternative plugin could replace this Jetpack feature.
