Publishing Engine – Thoughts on approach?

I’m preparing to build a publishing engine that fits our University’s needs.

Main idea: A central interface that allows an Editor to see content published across any of the sites using a contributor plugin within a selectable timeframe. The editor should be able to choose content and media, and match it with a web property where they want the title and snippet w/link to display. Display locations are setup ahead of time on each web property. The editor should be able to see what’s currently displayed and where. They should also be able to set drop dates (the date the piece is no longer visible across the network).

I welcome any thoughts on this idea. I’m pretty sure I can develop it but would welcome the opportunity to check in with a core contributor or plugin author as I move it along to be sure it’s following best practices and the code is secure, clean and lean.
