• I’m new to WordPress – I’ve just inherited what has been labeled a ‘problem website’ as part of my new job. I’ve worked in other website platforms, but I’m just not figuring WordPress out. So, with all that in mind, I have a few questions that may need explanations that are a little more in depth than normal. But first, the basics: https://www.re-store.org, version 4.4.2, using Google Chrome.

My first order of business when logging onto the site was to edit a few pages (namely the Current Open Position’s page, as I’m now filling the advertised role). However, I see that the previous website admin made those edits, they just aren’t loading. When I open that page up in the edit screen, I see the correct, but there is no ‘Publish’ button. Under the publish tab, it says the page is published, visible to public and last edited on May 17, 2016. I don’t even know where to begin getting the edits to publish to public view.

My second order of business is trying to figure out why the site is loading so slowly. The slowness is observed both when I’ve logged in and when I’m not. Yesterday I was on chat with Dreamhost, and the tech was able to update all of plugins for me (which for some reason were asking for FTP info and wouldn’t update despite using the correct FTP info). He suggested that with the plugin update I’d need to clear my cache on the site, browser, etc. I think I cleaned all of the caches, but the site still isn’t loading at a pace that I consider decent (and more importantly, the page edits still aren’t updating).

Next, the plugin W3 Total Cache is giving me an error ( WS Total Cache Error: Files and directories could not be automatically created to complete the installation) and won’t let me delete or deactivate it without it telling me to execute some commands. This is not something I know how to deal with.

I’d appreciate as much help as possible. I need to send a newsletter out later this week/early next week and need to include links a few of the pages with edits that won’t publish.

    Thanks in advance!

    A few ideas:
do you have any oversized that are loading images?
have you checked site speed in pingdom.com or webpagetest.org?

I assume you have administrator permissions on the website.
Can you share the list of plugins you are using?
Are you using a highly customized theme?
can you disable plugins to see if there is one that is causing a performance issue?
    have you tried this tool?

Thanks for writing back. I have some larger images, but they aren’t over 150kb. I’ll still be going in to shrink those. The theme is sterling, not highly customized. Yes, I have administrator permissions.

I somehow MacGyvered the edits to publish by updating to the most recent version of WordPress. The previous website admin suggested that I not update, but I haven’t seen any ill effects yet, only positive.

I checked the speed in webpagetest.org per your suggestion. The load time for the first view is 4.621s, down from almost 6 yesterday before the WordPress updates. For both requests and bytes, Javascript is the main reason for the slowdown. Any ideas how I can rectify this?

I don’t yet know which pieces of the website need which plugins, but if I can somehow get javascript to run a bit faster I’d be really thrilled. I haven’t disabled plugins one by one to see if they are the performance draw because it takes at least 20 seconds from the time of click to fruition. Checking each plugin would take forever.

The list of plugins is as follows:
    Acunetix WP Security
    Akismet
    Attention Grabber
    Broken Link Checker
    CMS Tree Page View
    Dave’s WordPress Live Search
    Display Widgets
    DreamObjects Backups
    Duplicate Post
    Formstack Plugin
    Formstack Widget
    Google Analytics by Monsterinsightsram
    HTML Javascript Adder
    Insert Headers and Footers
    Layerslider WP
    P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler)
Photonic Gallery for Flickr, Picasa, Smugmug, 500px, Zenfolio and Instagram
    Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin
Rotating Tweets (Twitter widget & shortcut)
    SiteTree
    Slick Social Share Buttons
    W3 Total Cache
    Widgets on Pages
    WP Edit
    WP Statistics
    wpcu3er
    Yoast SEO
    YouTube

Thanks for your help and advice!

can you see from using P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler)-which plugins are taking up the most resources?

I think it would be a good investment of time:
1-to determine which (if any) plugins might be dragging the site performance
2-to figure out which plugins are critical, nice to have and not really need.
3-see if there is any accumulation of old stuff unnecessary in your database tables that can be removed
