• For as long as I’ve had Jetpack installed and Publicize activated, it has worked in a particular way. If before you publish your post, you click ‘edit details,’ the message in the box shows the post title, highlighted for you to edit if you choose. If you never click ‘edit details,’ the message that goes to Facebook/other social media is essentially the whole first paragraph or more. It ends with “… [ 459 more words ]” or whatever the remaining wordcount may be.

As of last week, it seems to be posting the whole first paragraph regardless of ‘edit details’ being clicked or not. Here’s the tricky part though – it is not consistent. I have posted to the site experiencing the problem, clicked edit details, and Facebook got the title, as expected. The problem only happens when another admin on my site posts.

She spends time editing the custom message, but that message never makes it to Facebook. I can’t imagine why it’s happening to her and not me. She is clicking edit details and scheduling or updating the post as usual. Any idea what’s going on here? Thank you.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    Thanks for the report!

I can’t seem to be able to reproduce on my end. Here is what I’ve tried:

    1. As an admin, I created a new Publicize connection to Facebook, and made that connection available to all users on the site.
    2. I logged out of my site.
    3. I logged back in with a different admin user.
    4. I went to the Jetpack menu, and linked that account to a different WordPress.com account.
    5. I went to Posts > Add New, and starting writing a new post. I could see the shared connection above the Publish button.
    6. I clicked on “Edit Details”, and entered a custom message.
    7. I hit save to save my draft.
    8. I hit Publish.

The post was published to Facebook, using the custom message.

Can you think of anything the other author might have done differently on your site? Could you maybe walk me through the steps she follows to publish a post?

    Thanks!

Hi Jeremy. Thanks for answering. I watched the other admin create and schedule a new post. She did everything right and as usual. I’m not sure what the problem was, but it seems to have resolved itself. The custom message has been sent correctly to social media ever since.

Strangely, starting yesterday, I’ve been getting new post notifications for the site in question. This happened once before and it turned out to be the result of a hack. No evidence of that yet, but I wonder if the two incidents are related.

I’ve been getting new post notifications for the site in question

Are those Jetpack notifications, or sent via another plugin? Jetpack Notification emails look like this:

If you’re receiving Jetpack Notification emails, you can go to Jetpack > Settings to check if the Subscriptions module is enabled. If it is, you can check if you’re a subscriber here:

Yes, they look like that. They are from Jetpack. I’ve unsubscribed. What’s odd is that I did not subscribe in the first place.

What’s odd is that I did not subscribe in the first place.

Is it possible that you subscribed a long time ago, and forgot about it? There are currently 2 ways to subscribe to a Jetpack site:

    1. Through the site itself: you need to enter your email address in the site’s subscription form, and then confirm your subscription by clicking on a link you receive in a confirmation email.
    2. Through WordPress.com: if you’re a WordPress.com user, you can start following sites by entering their URL on this page:

No, I never subscribed. Last week, I went to that same link (wordpress.com/following/edit) and unsubscribed from everything I was subscribed to. I clicked unfollow for 5 different sites I never subscribed to in the first place.

Just now I got another one of the notification emails. When I go to that link, it shows I am again subscribed to this site. I’m signed up for instant email notifications of new posts. How on earth is this happening? I’m concerned it is indicative of a larger problem.

I checked our logs for your account, and I can see that you unsubscribed on September 6th, and then subscribed again an hour ago. That would explain why you received a notification email.

I don’t have much more information than this, I’m afraid. As I suggested in the thread you started last month, if you didn’t subscribe yourself, someone else must have subscribed for you. All I can suggest in this case is that you change your password. I would also recommend that you review the computers you use to log in to your WordPress.com account; try running an anti-virus, as well as reviewing your list of browser extensions, to make sure that some of your actions aren’t logged by a malicious extension or a virus.

Since you subscribed just an hour ago, I would also recommend reviewing every action you took in the past hour or so.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you. I will look into those possibilities. I haven’t gone to that website in the past hour so it’s very odd.
