• Hi folks,

    I have a fresh install of WP 3.2.1 which is throwing up this memory when I try to upload images via the Upload New Media screen:

    Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 68943872) (tried to allocate 18432 bytes) in /home/xxxx/public_html/wp-includes/media.php on line 254

    I have spent close to an hour on the phone to support @ Hostgator, and tried various fixes I have read on this forum, but nothing seems to work and it’s starting to drive me crazy!

    The images I am trying to upload are all 3.5 – 4 MB in size, and I have successfully uploaded close to 50 images of similar size to this over the last few years with no problems what so ever.

    The Memory size of my server is set to 64M & we tried this as well:

    ?THIS TO BE ENTERED IN THE WP-CONFIG FILE WHICH IS IN THE ROOT OF THE WORDPRESS SETUP:
    ENTER AFTER:?define(‘ABSPATH’, dirname(__FILE__).’/’);
    THE FOLLOWING:

    define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);

    and I have also checked that my php.ini file has memory_limit = 64M.

    We even tried increasing the (in the php.ini) max_execution_time to 300 and the max_input_time to 300, but none of these things work either.

    Anyone who can help me figure this out & fix this would be regaled with gusto from the roof of my city town hall ??

    Failing that, I will write kind & generous things about you on my facebook page and blog ??

    Seriously though, if you have any ideas, I would be most grateful for your help and advice.

    BTW: the site is a fresh install (with content imported) with only the “WordPress Importer” plugin active. NOTHING else – just a 2011 1.2 Theme active.

    Thanks peoples.

    Eran

  • Hey ezza,

    I can’t speak to why that error is occuring, but 3.5-4MB an image is quite a lot! Are you saving your images at 72 resolution and losslessly compressing them? They should always be less than 1MB, usually much much less.

    Try visiting this site: pagespeed.googlelabs.com and running an analysis on the pages where you have a lot of images. It will give you suggestions whether you need to compress your images.

    i am having this exact problem too, and with hostgator as well.

    i have other wp sites hosted on another hosting provider but do not get this error.

    a solution would be nice.

    Try uploading smaller images.
