public_html -vs- www

    This is a newbie question I’m sure but…I recently installed wordpress in the “/www” folder of my ftp, which is the root right? I then noticed that I keep getting fatal errors from the “public_html” folder…So my question is when I install things in the “www” folder does it automatically install them in the “public_html” folder? Is it supposed to do that? Or should I just have installed my wordpress in the public_html folder to begin with? Do I need both of those folders?

  • So, do these errors appear in the browser or in your server logs? Can you post one?

    Unfortunately, this is one of those things that varies from hosting provider to hosting provider. That said, the public_html directory is often associated with your own user directory on the server, which is quite different from the DocumentRoot. Sorry if this is a bit techie.

    I just uninstalled wordpress (again) and I am about to reinstall it now. But to answer your questions the error was in my browser as well as in wordpress. i received one error wheb I was trying to make a post, and I received this error when I was trying to test the comments. “/home/toyaj/public_html/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 390” and this was an error “Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/toyaj/public_html/wp-config.php:51) in /home/toyaj/public_html/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 331”
    But I didnt install wordpress in that directory, but that’s where all my errors are coming from. Ok, so when I install it now, should i take a chance on installing it in the public_html folder this time? Also…Is it wise to use fantastico to do it for me?

    I reinstalled my wordpress in the public_html folder and it works fine now, I still couldn’t get wordpress2.3 fully functional, but I have the one right before that. Thanks for all your help.
