Protecting a whole website while being built

    Hello,

    I am just starting into the world of website design using WordPress and I’m in the middle of creating my website. I have very limited knowledge of HTML, CSS and no experience with PHP so please excuse my novice question.

    While my WordPress site is being built I would like to password protect the entire site until it is finished so visitors don’t see it. That is, when a visitor enters my URL, I want them to see a page with only the login box and nothing else. Once a person is logged in, they will be then taken to my homepage and the rest of the website will be accessible. Does your plugin do that?

    Or when the visitor enters my URL, they will see the content of the home page with the login box placed in it but not be able to access any of the pages or posts? My concern is that they will still be able to see the contents of the home page which does have posts.

    I just don’t know if your login box appears in its own page or if it doesn’t do I have to create a login page.

  • If you visit a site with the Password Protected plugin it will instantly show you a blank screen with login – a bit like the WordPress admin login.

    Until the user has entered the password they will not be able to see any of the WordPress posts or pages on your site.

    Password Protected only protects WordPress content (posts and pages etc) though so if you uploaded a static HTML file to your web space someone would still be able to see that if they typed in the full URL directly.

    Also, Password Protected does not protect your uploads folder so people would still be able to view your images etc if they knew the exact URL of an image.
