• This forum is promising. It is fast and seams to be a the best forum plugin for WordPress more or less.

However, user management is not handled nicely and because of this I will only give the plugin 3 stars.

WPForo uses its own user rights system, with access rights attached to a user group. Through the forums user registration, the user can be added to a user group, but only one user group.

This limitation makes the plugin unusable with other WordPress plugins that handles user rights, memberships, extended user profiles etc.

If you downgrade a users rights in WordPress, the user will continue to have access to the forum, unless you remember to manually change the rights in the forum as well.

Moderation can only be handled in the admin. So you cant give another user moderation rights and then keep them out of your admin. Moderation should be able to be handled on the front end of the website, so you can keep the admin for admin tasks.

The user profile, handles everything from password reset, to user info. So wpforo will not play nicely with any custom code you have to handle profiles. The best solution would be to be able to control this part with short codes so you can put the forum profil in your membership area or integrate it with whatever user profil page you have created. It is confusing for users that they need to have two separate profile pages. One for WordPress user profile, and one for the forum profile.

Because of these user managements limitation, I can’t give the plugin more than 3 stars. These limitation makes the plugin unusable for me, and incompatible with the WordPress user base on my website.

And this is really a shame, because the speed and features of the forum, makes the forum the best WordPress forum plugin out there. I find it better than bbpress and other forums like the DW Q&A forum which appears to be abandoned bye the developers. (No updates in almost a year)

If you plan to have a forum only website, then this plugin is great and deserves 5 stars. Not so great if it has to play with anything other user related on your WordPress website.

    Hi Henrik
Thank you for this detailed review.
As far as I see the main reason why this review is written is wpForo incompatibility with your Membership plugin.

user management is not there yet

I’d not say this. wpForo user management is the most powerful, it comes with Forum Access and Usergroup flexible combination, each of this has 20-30 access points and each of this can separately configured for each forum subForum. Users have forum profile and reputation system. And dozens of other function and features.

wpForo forum access system is very powerful, you can manage user access to each component of the forum, so using wpForo you get powerful functions to manage forum member access.

However in your case, the Membership plugin controls access based on WordPress role, but it’s not based on wpForo usergroup. This is the conflict point.
Please note, all wpForo users are the same WordPress users and have the same WordPress user roles. There is no difference between wpForo and WordPress users, they are the same objects. We can add a new option to allow you set wpForo Usergroup – WordPress Role relations and your issue will probably be solved. And this relation should automatically be synchronized.

Moderation can only be handled in the admin.

Moderation is also available on front-end. You can edit, delete, move, set it sticky, close, etc.. directly in topic page. Here is the documentation:
    Forum Moderation
    https://wpforo.com/docs/root/admins-and-moderators/forum-moderators/
    Topic and Post Moderation
    https://wpforo.com/docs/root/admins-and-moderators/topic-post-moderation/
If you’re talking about approve/unapprove feature it’s already done and will be available on front-end with next 1.3.2 version.

P.S. As you may noticed, wpForo version is 1.x.x. And you asking for 3rd party plugin compatibility. It’s already has dozens of functions and features in its 1.x.x version and it’s already compatible with many 3rd party plugins. But you should see that 1.x.x version is not the stage wpForo must be ready for the membership plugin you use.

In any case thank you for your interest in wpForo and for this detailed review, we’ll do our best to make it better and compatible with 3rd party plugins as much as possible.
