Products are shown as list on some pages

On some of the category pages, the products are shown in the list format. i.e 1st page is shown as a grid however subsequent pages are shown in list format. For example the 1st page has 3 columns and 5 rows of products (all good) . However the second page or few pages after the 1st page the products are shown in list format. This happens across some categories. I have tried disabling all the plugin and still no resolution. Can someone help ? Tried with Microsoft and Chrome browser. Both show the same issue.
