    Hi there,

I have a product (simple product) which I have added a link to in the “Downloadable files” field, but when I purchase this product and click the download link, it downloads a file. If I open this file in notepad, it displays the actual page HTML/CSS etc.

Am I doing something wrong here by linking to an actual URL? I guess another way would be to create a simple text file which would download and then include the link URL in there for users to access.

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks!

Hello @thetoolman123 can you take a screenshot of the backend of that product where you placed the URL for downloading the digital asset. Thanks

LOL great. Let me take a look. So that’s a page URL @thetoolman123 you need to literally upload the file you want people to download to the media library or click choose file there and upload the file or zip file and you’ll be all set.

    Thanks for the reply.

I see, is there not a way to link it to a URL? I’m sure I have done it before somehow?

You have? I’m not sure why you’re creating a product that then people can just share that link to that page as it won’t be encrypted.

I’d need to know more about your business approach here.

    Hi @thetoolman123,

The downloadable products are meant to include a direct download link to your digital product, you can learn more about downloadable products here: https://woocommerce.com/document/managing-products/virtual-downloadable/#downloadable-products.

I see, is there not a way to link it to a URL? I’m sure I have done it before somehow?

The easiest way would be to include a PDF with more details on your page. If it’s a private page, you can add the password for it, too. You could also opt to include this URL in the order completed email instead.

However, if what you’re trying to sell specifically is access to premium content on your site, I’d suggest a subscription or paywall setup instead.

As @serafinnyc, we’d need to learn more about your business model in order to provide the most accurate suggestion for you!

I hope this helps so far.
