• Hello everyone.

I got some very good help in another subforum and was redirected here to hopefully get some advice on this issue I have.

In short, we recently (3 months ago) created a new WordPress site to replace our old Magento one that was in very bad shape. The new one is much better, though we are still in the process of improving it and ironing out a few kinks.

One of the problems I have noticed is that the permalink /product-category/ seems to appear in the URL for a product, with the actual product category after it.

    Eg.
    A current working link is:

    https://www.mysite.ie/product-category/used-woodworking-machinery/used-cnc-routers/

    I understand this should be:

    https://www.mysite.ie/used-woodworking-machinery/used-cnc-routers/

Our site has over a thousand products and at the moment I’m working through some issues with redirecting (lots) of 404 links from Google. I would be afraid to jump headlong into this and change the permalink structure without advice, as I wouldn’t want to make things worse in that department.

My question is: Is this incorrect and fixable? And if so, would you recommend fixing it or leaving it alone?

Any help or advice you could give me on this will be very, very much appreciated.

    Darran

    Hey Darran,

This is something you can easily change in WordPress: Settings > Permalinks > Product Permalinks.

You may need to set up a few wildcard 301s to fix any strays that are visiting via your current permalink structure. If you set your site up with Google Webmaster Tools then you’ll get a report of any 404s that are coming up after that.

I’ve never had a problem switching myself, but if you’re worried about it then I’d read as many articles you can about it, it’ll either put your mind to rest or you’ll make the decision not to do it.

Usually the only major issue with switching is SEO but it sounds like you’re on top of that.

Thank you very much Emily. I sound like I’m on top of the 301’s but I have a bit of work to do yet!

I see that product-category is given as the product category base, to make perfectly sure I understand, if I remove this will the product-category permalink dissapear from all links? Or would it be substituted for some other default?

Thanks again for the quick reply,

    Darran.
