Product Back In Stock After Refund Without “Restock Refunded Items” Checked

    Just having a minor issue with refunds at the moment. The error occurs when you first refund an item with the “Restock Refunded Items” unchecked, and then mark the the order at Complete. This results in the refunded (and no longer available) product being placed back in stock on the site.

    Is this actually an issue or am I just using the refund functionality wrong? The issue doesn’t occur when I complete an order first and then refund afterwards.

    I have also found that leaving this box unchecked doesn’t work – it is adding the items back in stock regardless.

    Is this issue (still) happening with the latest version of WooCommerce? I tested this on my test site and was unable to replicate it:

    Thanks for your message. It is still happening and all of my plugins are up to date. I have a staging site but haven’t had a chance to start testing different scenarios, such as if it happens when refunding from Processing or Completed status, etc.

    Anything I might want to look for or try when troubleshooting would be helpful!

    Hi @ehmarketing. I tested with from both Processing and Completed order statuses. I recommend using your staging site to do some conflict testing. We have a guide here to help – https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/how-to-test-for-conflicts/.

    Thanks for your help with this issue and sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you.

    Just to recap: when doing refunds and leaving the box Restock refunded items unchecked, the item is still being added back in stock.

    I have finally had a chance to check this on a staging site, and it works fine, I can’t replicate the issue there (with all plugins active – so this doesn’t seem to be caused by a plugin conflict).

    So, I wonder if this could be a server side issue? A few months ago I changed something to do with CRON jobs, this isn’t something I really understand, I followed the instructions they gave me: https://www.siteground.com/tutorials/wordpress/real-cron-job/

    Could this be connected to the issue I am describing with refunds? And were these changes they advise a bad idea?

    Hi @ehmarketing. I don’t think this is a Cron issue if you set up read Cron jobs on your site. I think it may be due to site caching. If there is any caching on the site/server, does deactivating it help?

    That could well be the case – I recently had another issue caused by caching, so I have installed the SG Optimizer from my host and excluded the cart, checkout and account pages so that they don’t get affected. Perhaps I need to exclude all /wp-admin pages, or is there a better way to target this problem?

    I’m a bit confused by your conflict test message above, as in my previous message I said

    “I have finally had a chance to check this on a staging site, and it works fine, I can’t replicate the issue there (with all plugins active – so this doesn’t seem to be caused by a plugin conflict).”

    In fact, I double checked this again today, creating a new staging site with a more up to date replica of my current live site. The stock issue isn’t happening on the staging site.

    Hi @ehmarketing. You’re right. The error is mine here. I apologize for the confusion.

    So if the issue doesn’t happen on the staging site but happens on the live site, the question is what’s different between those two environments?

    You mentioned having installed SG Optimizer. An easy way to test if that’s the cause of the issue is to temporarily deactivate it and do a refund without restocking items. Does it work without issues then?

    Thanks for getting back so quickly. I created a new staging site yesterday, using a tool in my host server that creates an exact replica of my live site, with SG Optimizer running and all the same settings, and still it was working in the staging site but not the live site.

    I have asked my colleague to let me see all refunds before they are done and oversee as they are being done so I can make notes and screenshots of the steps she is taking, the payment method, the status they’re in, etc, to see if I can’t find a pattern emerging.

    I realise it is a bit of a mystery, I will see if SG Optimizer have any ideas, and I will try and collect more data around what I am doing when it happens.
