Processor Declined

I am new to Braintree. I just had a transaction process through this plugin, only to be marked as ‘Processor Declined’ inside Braintree’s control panel. So as far as the customer is aware, the purchase was successful and nothing went wrong, but I have to contact them manually asking for payment through an alternate method.
This seems like it wouldn’t work at all in many scenarios, particularly if you need to offer instant activation/access to digital content. Is this a flaw inherent in Braintree as a payment processor, or is there something that can be done? I’m going to have to stop using the plugin because of this.
