I have over 7000 images in my library. I want to remove unused image sizes to cut down on bloat. The process stopped at 28%.

I’m wondering if this is more of a server issue than an issue with your plugin, because I ran ‘featured images only’ and it finished quickly and did a great job.

With this many images, do I need to configure something on my server? When I ran it the first time, I made sure not to close the browser. I didn’t even close the window. In fact, I played Lord of the rings in a different window to make sure my computer didn’t go into sleep mode ??

Hoping you can point me in the right direction. Not sure how else to get this done.

Hey @digitalrenewal – thanks for your message and for using our plugin.

I’m sorry to hear about the issue noted by you, could you please let me know whether it always stops at 28% in case you tried to run the plugin multiple times?
If you didn’t, then please try to run it again to see what happens.

I look forward to hearing from you,
    Alex

I think that I have this figured out… I tried the original regenerate thumbnails plugin, and that one didn’t complete either.

Then I tried yours, a much better plugin, with much better options, and I highly recommend it. Works great in most cases and I will use it on my other sites. This particular site has 7600 images. I ran it once and it stopped at 28%. Then I ran it on Just the featured images and it worked like a charm.

Since I have so many images, I believe its a script timing issue on my server. This process will take days with so many images and my server will not allow the script to run for that long.

The plugin Ajax Thumbnail Rebuild is working and is a good alternative in this situation. The description explains the exact issue I was having. It runs multiple scripts one after the other so they will not time out. The downside is that the process will not run in the background and you cannot close the window or allow the computer to hibernate. So I’ve been walking on eggshells around my computer until the process finishes – sticky note that says do not close, playing movies while im away so i dont burn images into my screen. Not ideal, But Its working.

Thanks for the quick response! I will definitely use your plugin in the future. It does really work great for regular use.

@digitalrenewal – thank you for taking the time to share your experience & solution here so that others can benefit from your insights! ??

I’m glad that Ajax Thumbnail Rebuild was the solution for you but please note that our plugin uses the same technology so I don’t think the problem you faced at 28% was related to timeouts but rather to some metadata issues that got the plugin stuck.

Have a nice day & thank you for your support!

I installed the plugin today and faced the same issue. The regenerator stopped at 28 %. When I opened it in a new window however it continued from 28 %. BUT In the first window I had checked “delete unused thumbnails” and this was not checked in the second window so a lot of thumbnails were not deleted which was why I ran the generator. I tried again and it stopped at 68 % (8 seems to be the number). Is there any way of deleting thumbnails without regenerating cus I have 2800 pictures and it takes hours for it to finish (and get stuck).

Correction. I just checked my drive and no thumbnails have been deleted. So now my question is: how do I delete thumbnails? I check the box that says “Delete Unused Thumbnails” and then I click regenerate. It says that all thumbnails not selected in the settings will get deleted. I have selected 3 sizes to keep but in my drive I have 5 different sizes so the plugin basically did nothing. Is there a backup folder I have to empty or how does this work? Maybe I have to check the meta data box too?

    Hi @japanoholic,

Can you please send us a screenshot of your reGenerate Thumbnails Advanced settings, and another one of your drive showing the current thumbnails?

    Thank you,

    This is the drive

As you can see there are thumbnails with the size 300 and 400. I only want to keep thumbnails 150 and 345. In the media settings I have now updated all other thumbnails to size 0x0 but after regenerating they still keep their original size. My drive is almost full so I need more space and removing thumbnails is how I want it.

    This is the plugin settings

As you can see I have only checked the 2 sizes I need (150 and 345) – checked the delete option and I have clicked regenerate but it has been stuck on 62 % for the last 24 hours. I never get to 100 %

    Hey @japanoholic,

I see. I don’t see anything wrong from your screenshots. The next step I think would be to have admin access so we can check what is going on. Can we have it, please? You can send us the credentials using this contact form, and make sure to mention this ticket.

    Thank you!
