I’ve just installed version 3.1 and blog is looking good generally except the visual editor is no longer functioning properly.

There are no buttons at the top of the text box, the text is set to be white, so you can only see it when you highlight or switch to the HTML view. Also when you do switch from HTML back to visual, the html tags are still visible.

    Anyone resolved this?

I have de-activated my plugins hoping that this would resolve – it did not. I have checked the active_plugin row within the db and that was zero so it had registered the deactivation correctly.

    Any ideas out there please?

  • I’m having this same problem and haven’t been able to figure it out. I’ve done a little research and it seems to be a problem that a lot of people are dealing with, unfortunately. Any fixes would be fantastic.

I just did a reinstall of WordPress (using the automatic updater within WordPress) and that didn’t fix it either. Sometimes I can see the Visual Editor view, but even then only SOME of the TinyMCE buttons work … but not all of them. The link creation button doesn’t work, for example. If I go into HTML view, it works just fine. I wonder if this is all related to the upgrades to the intra-site linking?

Laura — What browser are you using? I normally use Firefox, but I just powered up my version of IE8. When I log in using IE8, everything seems to work normally. I haven’t checked Chrome or Safari, but this might be a temporary work-around until the bug is squashed or someone finds a fix.

    Have you tried:

    – working through the solutions suggested in Troubleshooting WordPress 3.1 – Master List

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

endgamepr – If ONLY Firefox is having problems, can you flush your cache for that entirely?

Also I have this vague memory of some versions of FireFox breaking TinyMCE. Is there an upgrade for FF?

Ipstenu — Tried clearing my Firefox cache … didn’t make any difference.

Funny you should mention previous versions of Firefox breaking TinyMCE. That’s how I figured out to try IE8. In my research of the problem, I came across some old troubleshooting posts about a problem in WP 2.7 that was very, very similar to this one.

I’ve also tested Chrome, and it works just fine. It’s obviously a Firefox issue. Pain in the rear to switch browsers just for WordPress usage, but at least I know there is a workaround.

PS – I’m using the latest public release of FF, version 3.6.13

Although no help, I have the same problem with the same hosting company. I installed WordPress installed via a Free 123-app easy site creation tool on my 123-reg hosting and then updated via the button. I have tried Safari, Chrome and Firefox with all the same problem. I deleted all my unused plugs and emptied the cache but no result. Like you i am cautious in changing too much at this early stage.

I think there is problem on multisite instalation – when user have superadmin editor work fine – any diffrent user don’t have working editor…

I have exactly the same problem – visual editor just disappeared on all of my installs of WordPress that I updated. Doh!

phew – was starting to think i was alone. Suppose until its figured out it will force me to brush up on my html… but thats kind of not the point… :s

endgamepr – I have done the same as you, with the same results. Seems to work fine with IE8 – however I am loathe to use it.

Hopefully Firefox will come up with a bug fix.

Laura — It despise IE as well. Try Chrome. I’m using it to edit a client site right now, and it works just fine.

Have you tried the manual upgrade?

Actually, my initial upgrade WAS manual. I upgraded the site from a much earlier version of WP. When I tried the re-install option, I did it through WP with the automatic installer.
