I’ve just installed version 3.1 and blog is looking good generally except the visual editor is no longer functioning properly.

There are no buttons at the top of the text box, the text is set to be white, so you can only see it when you highlight or switch to the HTML view. Also when you do switch from HTML back to visual, the html tags are still visible.

    Anyone resolved this?

I have de-activated my plugins hoping that this would resolve – it did not. I have checked the active_plugin row within the db and that was zero so it had registered the deactivation correctly.

    Any ideas out there please?

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – increasing the memory available to PHP:

how would i go about re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress please?

Just temporarily. If there’s no problem with Twenty Ten then you know the issue is somewhere in your theme files. Set it right back after testing.

how would i go about re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WordPress please?

Download a fresh copy of WP. Upload the folders via FTP to your server.

Thanks – I’ve just switched to Twenty Ten and the issue persists.

I shall now try a fresh copy of the wp-admin and wp-includes folders. Will this upset any of my configuration?

Will this upset any of my configuration?

It shouldn’t. There is no theme or other site-specific information in those folders, it’s the core WP functionality only. If you’re really worried, you could make a backup of your existing folders first. Just be sure to upload them to the right location within your WP installation.

So I’ve made backups of my wordpress files and the db via ftp – and have the fresh wp-admin and wp-includes folders ready to ftp to my hosting. My question is – I have WordPress installed via a Free 123-app easy site creation tool on my 123-reg hosting, which takes care of all the hassle for me (usually).

I have noticed that the version which appears to be installed on the server states 3.0.4 release 4. I’m wondering if this is causing the issue? I’m just very wary of doing anything that makes my situation worse!

I suppose I’m being over cautious but I just don’t have the time or knowledge for this to get any worse. Thanks for all the advice so far!

There could certainly be a conflict but I’m not clear that I understand you. Are you saying you installed the site originally using your host’s easy-installation tool, but then did a manual update from 3.0.4 to 3.1 yourself, earlier? Or you clicked on the “update WordPress” link in your site?

p.s. in general it’s best to stick to one method. i.e. if you did an install via a tool like Fantastico, you’re best to use the same tool to do upgrades, otherwise things can get out of synch. These 3rd-party installation tools are usually somewhat behind in terms of what version of the software they’re offering, which is one of the reasons I never recommend using them.

yes exactly that – originally I installed using the easy-installation tool, and the update was done via the automatic update within WP itself. Unfortunately as you say, they are only offering 3.0.4 at the moment. Is it better me soldiering on until they catch up (if ever) or chancing it with thr replacement of the wp-admin and wp-includes folders? I’ve read some horror stories of people’s experiences when this was attempted and I’m worried!

Let me ask you one more thing – what does it say within your admin area now, does it say you’re running 3.1?

If so, I would personally go for the careful replacement of wp-admin & wp-includes from a fresh copy of WP 3.1.

Is it better me soldiering on until they catch up (if ever)

Even if once they begin offering 3.1, now that you’ve done your own upgrade within WordPress, bypassing their tool, I’m not sure you’ll ever be able to use their tool again – you’d need to contact them for support on that front.

p.s. you could also first try the other method esmi suggested above, if you want:

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Also – have you checked to see whether you’re running one of the plug-ins known to be incompatible with 3.1, in this thread? (even though I know you said you tried deactivating plug-ins)

WordPress itself says 3.1. My hosting says 3.0.4. I agree, I will contact the host to see if they have any advice – their website is clear as mud and directs users to www.remarpro.com.

I have tried the other method with no joy i’m afraid. Thanks for all your help though ??

Guess I will have to bite the bullet and replace the wp-admin and wp-includes folders.

thanks – have checked that link but none of those apply to me unfortunately :s

So I have replaced the wp-admin and wp-includes folders – however there is no change. Any further suggestions please? Thanks!
