Problems with speciific theme element

My problem Is I can extensivly edit a theme, but cannot create one from scratch.
I am trying to convert https://source.bungie.org/ to WordPress, I started with K2 becouse of its many built in features but trying to mod it to look like the old theme has been a mess.
The only thing I really need is a sidebar on the mainpage but not individual pages, can anyone link me a basic modable theme like this or the address to a themeing guide
