Problems with posts using Japanese characters in the title

    I just migrated my blog from WordPress.com to a self-hosted site. Things seemed to be going good, but then I tried to make my first new post and even though it shows up on my main page, if I click the link to the post I get a “Nothing Here!” error.

    I narrowed this down to a problem with the Japanese characters in the title. This worked fine before on WordPress.com, so I am guessing there is a configuration setting somewhere. Here is the link for the page that fails to load:

    However you can see the article itself is showing up here:

    If someone can please help me troubleshoot this problem I’d appreciate it.

    One more thing – it is not an acceptable workaround to avoid Japanese characters from the titles because my blog is about learning Japanese, and I also have many other preexisting posts with Japanese characters in the titles. I checked one of these and the same problem happens.

    Could be a permalink issue, did you try resetting the permalink ?

    I tried resetting the permalink (if by this you mean to click on ‘save settings’ in the permalink settings page), no luck. Even with a single Japanese character in the title, I get this problem:

    https://selftaughtjapanese.com/index.php/2015/09/10/test-post-4-は/

    In case it matters, my permalinks are set to “custom structure” with the host name followed by this string:

    “/index.php/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/”

    What happens if you change the permalink structure to
    /index.php/%post_id%-%postname%/

    My guess is that should either work or give you an infinite redirect.

    WordPress does support non-ASCII chars in the URL / post title, so it sounds like the characters are getting mangled at some point on your installation.

    Xoogu, thanks for the idea. I changed the permalink structure to “day and name” (https://selftaughtjapanese.com/2015/09/10/sample-post/) and now it works! The strange thing is the looks almost identical to the structure I had before.

    Problem solved!
