No problems for a long time until the 2.1.6 update. Since then with 2.1.6 thru 2.1.8 on several sites (but not all… yet!) I’m getting text-only in Upcoming Events widgets, html-only in some calendar pages, and when I Deactivate I get “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.” when I try to reActivate, and when I Delete and install an older version (2.1.5, 2.0.6).

This is an incredible mess once again. I love your display options but it’s just not worth having multiple sites break so often. Have to go with function over form in this case. This is about the 6th time your tinkering updates have caused major melt-downs. Looks like I’ve got a major amount of work to do converting several sites to a new calendar system. Thanks for nothing.

No other indication of what the error is other than cannot reactivate. This had hit 2 different websites. On one I deleted the Extended Views, then deactivated/reactivated the main plugin. Reloaded/activated the Extended Views and it worked again. Tried that on the other website when the problem surfaced and now can’t activate the main plugin. No other plugins added or updated on either site during the period.

Since I can’t activate the plugin I can’t try step 2 as suggested.

I did try reinstalling 2.1.5, and also tried reinstalling 2.0.6 (removing previous installs first of course) and both time got the same “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”

Is there a way to export ai1ec calendar items from my other websites where it’s still working as a backup or for transfer to another plugin, in case ai1ec goes down on those too?

Minor updates like 2.1.x versions usually do not add functionality, they are just bug fixing, so actually, if you have a 2.1.x websites which are working, you can skip upgrading until 2.2 which will add new features.
As i wrote in your other thread you should look in the error log for errors.

Well, apparently GoDaddy (where this site is hosted…not my choice) doesn’t collect error logs until it is initialized, and it takes 24 hours for a report to be generated after it is initialized.

However, on another site with ai1ec installed I tried to go back to previous months when events were on the calendar and got this error:
Something went wrong while fetching events.
    The request status is: 200
The error thrown was: SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected end of data at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data

And the error log on JustHost shows a repeating string of errors when I accessed the site:
[22-Nov-2014 22:07:46 UTC] PHP Warning: Illegal string offset ‘domain’ in /home2/whitesa8/public_html/gorgefloods/wp-includes/l10n.php on line 409

Don’t know if that helps at all, probably the best I can do for you.

Update… I was able to download 3 events out of many using the WordPress Tools>Export function. Download using the Subscribe button didn’t bring over any events, even though many were listed in the All Events list. I cloned one of those and set it to a future date. All looked fine until I went to the front page of the site and only got the frame with a big blank in the header image area. Knowing this was probably related to ai1ec, I changed the plugin name using FTP, knowing that it would deactivate the plugin. Sure enough, the site came back just fine except for nothing on the calendar page and any place I had an ai1ec widget or shortcode.

I’m afraid to do anything on the sites where ai1ec appears to still be working. And from the Support page it looks like I’m not alone.

Is there a way to download the events from the All Events listing on the Dashboard side of the site? If I Activate the plugin I can list all the existing events on my GorgeFloods.org site, but the public side of the site is completely messed up so I can’t get to the Subscribe link. If I can download from the Dashboard side I won’t lose the events I’ve added to the site.

Or is there a way to get the .ics link so I can temporarily activate the plugin and try transferring the events to an .ics-compatible calendar?

    Hi, so let’s recap:
    1) if you want to export events, i don’t think that WordPress Export works, ics is a better option. Export link is
    https://www.yourwebsite.com/?plugin=all-in-one-event-calendar&controller=ai1ec_exporter_controller&action=export_events
    2) PHP Warnings do not block PHP script execution, and that error is not related to us i think.
    3) when you get SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected end of data at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data it means that the server responded with something which wasn’t correct. Can i have a link of where this is happening?

Sorry. The site that displayed the Syntax Error is an active production site and I had to change over to the CalPress Calendar plugin. The CalPress Calendar plugin recognizes the All-In-One Event Calendar events, though it doesn’t maintain the dates. That partial recovery certainly isn’t optimal, but it’s better than having to recreate all the events. That site is GorgeFloods.org

I think calpress simply took our codebase and rebranded it, but it’s based on an older version of our plugin.
Well in any case i’m marking this as solved then

Maybe, just maybe the problems your apps keep causing is why someone rebranded your code. I wouldn’t say Solved… more like Ignored… and good luck with our next release!
You’re welcome for the help I tried to render.

Calpress is more or less our code at version 1.8/1.9. I’m not saying they did anything illegal, evrybody could take our core plugin and rebrand/resell it it’s the way wordpress works and there is nothing wrong in it, i’m just explaining why it works.
As you said dates are not ported and this will probably happen if you switch back to our version because we changed date handling.
Anyway, we plan to release 2.1.9 probably next week
