Problems with MU Install

Hello, I have been running a WPMU site with multiple blogs for my members. I wanted to try some of the WPMU Dev plug ins but found that they did not really work to well and were very confusing to set up. Since I had been previously using the s2member plugin I decided to go back to that. When I did, everything went haywire. At any rate, i decided to uninstall everything. So I went to cpanel and removed the install, I reinstalled worpdress and went back thru the Mu setup. I did not redo the wildcards and all because they were not actually a part of the Wpmu install and were not removed. At any rate, when I get to the part where I add define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true);
to my wp-config.php and save it, I go back to my site and this is all i get instead of seeing the site I see Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/cb3dmesp/public_html/wp-config.php on line 1
At this point I try to fix it by simply removing the new define from the wp-config file. That does not work. I have tried closing off the <?php at the end of the file and that throws up an error for line 14 but line 14 is commented out text. So then I use the backup I made of the wp-config file and it goes right back to the first error and i have to reinstall wp again to get it back. What I dont get is how when the wpmu site was running before it was upgraded to 3.2 with no problems, what could be happening here that I may be missing?
