• I’m having problems both uploading and linking to music files in my blog. Even after changing my host server’s parameters to allow for long uploads & large file sizes I cannot upload music files (this one’s 6 MB) from within the WP interface. I can’t even upload using the Automatic WP Player Plugin Control Panel. But I CAN upload the files via ftp & have done so.

But I’ve never tried to create a link to an image or music file directly fr. ftp & I’m having trouble getting the filepath & filename right. Hoping someone can help….

In my ftp folders the filepath is:
    /public_html/tikun_olam/files/

I believe the filepath for the link should look like this:
    https://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/files/…

    The filename is:
    Jane-Siberry-Calling-All-Angels.wma

I’ve tried to get this link to work w/o success:

    https://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/files/Jane-Siberry-Calling-All-Angels.wma

    Am I doing something wrong?

(Originally I uploaded the song w/o hyphens so let me know if changing the song file name would’ve created problems)

Also, does it matter how you encode a music file upload. I used ascii. Should I use something else?

  • Yeah, it should be binary.

For clarification, “it should be [uploaded as] binary.”

Thanks both of you. I’ll try that upload again in binary. UPDATE: it works!! Thanks so much for yr help.

Any ideas why the WP interface causes my uploads to die while ftp works? I have my max. upload size set really large plus I have .wma as a permitted file type.

And does it matter whether the file name has spaces or hyphens bet. words? It’s working now with spaces but I could rename it if I should.

Even though you have set a filesize limit for WP uploads, your server also has its own limit for any uploads being handled by a PHP process. For security purposes, your hosting provider may have set that limit to a very low filesize.

And does it matter whether the file name has spaces or hyphens?

The file should be fine with spaces in the filename, but it seems to be a common netiquette (internet etiquette) practice to avoid using spaces in the filename at all costs.

I think I mentioned in my first post here that I’d changed the config for my host server to enable extra long uploads (time wise) & extra lg. file sizes.

What I don’t understand is why ftping the files to my host server works, while trying to upload them directly via the WP interface doesn’t work. That indicates to me that WP is somehow preventing the upload. UPDATE: Do you mean to say that my host may have specific limitations on .php related uploads which it doesn’t apply to ftp uploads? If so, I wonder whether there’s a way to change upload settings for .php uploads?

Yes, I’d heard about the idea of not using spaces in filenames. My WMP settings are set to use hyphens in song file names but the software has a mind of its own & sometimes reverts to whatever format it wants (until I change it back to what I want–UGH!!).
