Problems moving a site.

  • Well apologies in advance, because this topic is pretty much “I messed up and didn’t read the codex properly, can someone fix it”
    but anyhow, the situation is this:
    I’m trying to move a site to a new server, I copied the whole site to my hard drive (but not the database, i didn’t know about phpmyadmin and misinterpreted database as a term for my whole website) then uploaded the site to a new server, setting up a new database and changing the config, then ran install and changed the addresses, when this resulted in an empty wordpress, I changed them back again to the old site.

    The problem that I have now is when i try and log into the old site, I get redirected to the new site. and i can’t really log into either of them.
    Can i recover from this? or has installing the new site lost me my old database? everything seems to be working okay on the old one, but I’m afraid to go any further in case something gets deleted.

  • You have a new site with no database (or rather and empty one)
    and the old site’s WP is pointing to the new site
    so nothing is pointing to the old database (which is on the server you don’t want).

    Backup the old database and upload it to the new database server in place of the empty one and your sorted.
