Problems after move and restore

  • I have two problems that I’m wondering if they are inter-related. I’ve searched the archives, but I haven’t found much help.

    What I’ve done:
    1) I’m using 1and1 as my web host. I recently switched hosting plans with them, thus necessitating a move from one server to another (within 1and1).

    2) The move seemed to go fine, no apparent glitches. But I didn’t check everything after the move. (ie I didn’t click every link, check every page, try to login, etc)

    3) I attempted to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.1.2, but I got a fatal error. Not wanting to worrying about it today, I restored my database files and did a clean restore of my server files.

    Now I have two problems:

    1) If I attempt to login (as admin), I get a continual redirect. The PW and username are entered correctly, but I am not able to get to the admin page. I cannot get there by manually entering the wp-admin link either. Same problem

    2) When I am at the main blog page, if I attempt to go to “next page” I get a 404 error saying that page 2 doesn’t exist. All other pages are there, and I can get to previous posts simply by looking at the archive months.

  • Who did the moving of WordPress? Did your webhost or you? Cause one thing I can think of is that the absolute path may have changed. For example on the old server it might have been /home/flywitheages/public_html/newsupdate and the new server might be /home2/flywitheagles/public_html/newsupdate. That would mess with things that require absolute path…

    The second thing I can think of is the .htaccess file might have problems.

    This is a drastic suggestion and you should wait for a few other answers first, but start from scratch. Do a clean reinstall and reimport the database. Then do a database upgrade: https://www.flywitheagles.org/newsupdates/wp-admin/upgrade.php.

    By reinstalling from scratch, a new .htaccess file will be created and everything will be cleaner…

    I did the move. I did change my root directoy naming a slight bit, so that may be the problem. I assume that the part of the path that I cannot see changed as well (I think that is what you are referring to).

    Help me think through this. If I do as you suggest (clean re-install, re-import the database), what will I lose?
    -I assume I’ll have to re-install my theme (no big deal)
    -I have no plug-ins.
    -I have a few pictures associated with posts, will I lose those?
    -I have two additional pages created, will I lose those?

    Any other implications that you can think of?

    I should also note that I transferred another wordpress site a couple days earlier, and I have had no problems with it. It is running 2.0.4.

    I did not change my root directory name on this website, so I assume that is the likely culprit.

    Any other suggestions before I do a clean re-install?

    Also, if I do a clean re-install, do I need to import the database after I install? Is there anything different about importing the database files that way?

    Would simply renaming my root directory to what I had previously fix my problem?
    On my previous server it was name “/New Wes/newsupdates/index.php”

    Now it is “/Wes/newsupdates/index.php”

    Would changing it back to “New Wes” possibly solve my problem?

    Changing the root directoy name back didn’t solve the problems. Does anyone know the answers to my questions relating to the re-install? Thanks!

    What kind of backup do you have? A db/phpMyAdmin backup or WP 2.1 xml backup?

    If you have xml backup, you can do a clean install of WP 2.1 in a new directory, get it up and running, install your theme and all plugins you use and then import back the backup file.

    If not – have a look in your .htaccess file and if OK, try running /wp-admin/upgrade.php (that may or may not fix it, so have your backup handy).

    If anything else fails, you can try editing your backup by hand (very tedious!) using only search/replace on whole words, not typing.

    In any case make sure you use exactly the same version of WP that the backup was made on.

    The saga continues: I made a clean install of wordpress in a new directory on my server (so as not to further disrupt what I am currently functioning on). I imported my site using a backed up XML file. When I clicked on “next page”, I no longer got the 404 error. Then I tried to login again. Same problem. Also, now I am getting the 404 error again after trying to login. I’m stumped. Any fresh ideas besides doing a complete re-install and copy and pasting everything back in?

    Did you try to log in before importing the backup? Perhaps there are some errors in the backup file too… I’m assuming you are trying that on exactly the same version of WP that the backup was created on and are installing manually, not from fantastico, etc..
