    Hi David,

I hope you are doing well.

I am having an issue with thumbnail generation again on https://www.claytonindustries.com/articles-case-studies/. For some reason, the first PDF thumbnail, “Gooseberry’s Frozen Custard, is generating in black. Yet, the file looks fine. Ive tried uploading s few times on different days.

    The file is at: https://www.claytonindustries.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Goodberry-Frozen-Custard-2021Apr-3.pdf

I tried the following fix again that you gave me last time, but it’s not working:
Navigate to the Media/Assistant admin submenu.
Check the box to the left of the document.
Pull down the “Bulk actions” list, select “Thumbnail” and click “Apply.
Leave the “Type (o) WP” selection in place.
You may have to change the “Existing items” selection to “Delete”, but try first with the “Keep” default.
    Click “Generate Thumbnails”.

Can you please help me fix this.

    Nick

Thanks for your report and for the links to your file; very helpful.

I downloaded your document and then uploaded it to my test system. WordPress generated the same black background I see on your site. I then applied MLA’s Thumbnail Generation function (the one you outlined in your post) using “Delete” to remove the existing files. The results look good to me – white background matching the original document.

If that’s not working on your system there may be a site configuration difference. The WordPress Site Info report for my system includes these components:

I will leave this topic unresolved for now. Let me know if the MLA Thumbnail generation with “Delete” option isn’t working for you, and if you have a different site configuration. Thanks for any additional information you can provide.

    Hi David,

“Delete” does not work either. Where do I get the site configuration info? I can send it along later.

I regret that MLA generation with the “Delete” option didn’t help.

    To get the configuration information:

    1. Navigate to the admin Home/Dashboard screen and make the “Site Health Status” metabox visible.
    2. Click the “Site Health screen” link.
    3. Click the “Info” tab, to the right of the default “Status” tab.
    4. Follow the “If you want to export a handy list…” instructions.
    5. The excerpt I posted above is towards the end of the report. You can post everything if there is no confidential information in it.

You can also contact me at my web site if you’d rather send the information by email.

Note that the problem might also be related to GhostScript, which is not included in the Site Info report.

My system uses a pretty old version, 9.20, released back in 2017. The current version is 9.54; I have not tried it.

If you can find your GhostScript version I can try to match it on my system for further analysis.

    Hey David,

I had my host update the Ghost Script. I tried regenerating the thumbnail again and it worked. I guess it was the Ghost Script. Thanx for your help!

Thanks for your update with the good news that updating GhostScript fixed the problem.

I am leaving this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any further trouble with PDF thumbnails. Thanks for your continuing interest in the plugin.
