@hutchman from I understood, this is happening to you on an edit user form, correct?

    What about you, @augustasstankevicius ?

Hello. I had the same problem and I have solved it.

You have probably created the form from an elementor widget.

It seems that by default it is configured so that the email is taken as username.

I recommend that you create a new form from the wordpress dashboard. The plugin brings an option to add new forms.

There you can enter a username field that connects directly with the username of wordpress. In addition, the mail field brings an option to enable or disable it as username (something we cannot do from elementor).

When you have created the form you can insert it in elementor using the shortcode.

Hope this plugin support fixes these issues. Because it is a very good plugin.

It also offers problems with the avatar image (it does not load it correctly).

    Greetings!

You can also create a series of custom fields in ACF and assign it the roles of user name, password, etc. Make it visible to user forms and then load it from the elementor widget.

In this way you can control the default role that the user will have and other issues that with the variant that I gave you earlier you will not be able to.
