Problem with Recent Posts widget and Responsive Theme

    I am finding that the Recent Posts widget is ignoring the ‘Number of posts to show’ parameter. I am able to control the number of posts displayed only by adjusting the ‘Blog pages show at most’ setting under Settings|Reading

    The problem does not occur, however, when I test using the default WordPress theme Twentyseventeen, so it would appear to be related to the use of the Responsive theme.

    I think it started happening at the WordPress 4.9 update.
