I have set the Permalinks on my web site (capecodbirds.org) to “Post name.” The URLs on about half of the pages are fine (e.g. the links page). But the other half have a “4/” inserted in the URL after the site name (e.g. the research page). Any idea what is causing this in some URLs but not others?

  • That is a very odd problem indeed, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. My theory was that you had some posts with the same name as your pages, and WordPress would then add a number to each of the page links to create a unique url, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for two reasons,
    1. You don’t have any posts, just pages.
    2. The 4 is in the wrong place. Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help.

Thanks for taking a look Bob. You are correct that I have, and have never had, any posts. I remain mystified!

Problem solved! I have not given a name to my home page, so WordPress assigned it a slug of 4. The pages that were showing “4/” in the URL I had designated as child pages of the home page in the Pages Attributes. I change those to “no parent” and problem solved.

hello, I am having a similar problem.. my posts and pages sometimes have similar names, and thus similar permalinks. When i then try to link a POST to a PAGE, it won’t do it….
example of POST permalink : ecuador-visto-por-los-ninos-2-2
example of PAGE permalink : ecuador-visto-por-los-ninos-2

how do i link the above post to my page??? i am going crazy trying to figure it out…
