We moved our WP site from BlueHost to Media Temple on a dedicated server.

Although we have all the necessary permissions, it’s not allowing us to overrite any files in order to perform our upgrade.

Is this a problem with server settings or is there something tricky that we need to resolve within WP?

We have no idea why this is an issue, because we can overrite files outside of WP just fine, which leads us to think that it may not be the server. But when we want to upload themes, etc, and when we want to overrite the existing files with the new WP ones, it’s not allowing us to.

Your help would be really appreciated.

We have upgraded our sites many times before without this issue in shared hosts, this is the first time it ever happens to us, and we know it’s not an issue with the FTP or with how we are upgrading – we need some help figuring out what it is. What do we do in order to be able to overrite our files?

so delete the old files, thats what you should be doing anyway.

as to the why, thats a question for your host — thats NOT a wordpress problem.

Overwriting is part of the upgrading process:

Copy the new WordPress files to your server, overwriting old files in the root

Youre quoting the codex to me ?? Awesome. Ive been an active member here for 4 years this November, I know what the codex says.

Did you read the extended upgrade instructions?

Whooami, with all due respect, I asked for help, not attitude. I will simply wait for someone respectful to direct me to a solution.

Whooami gave the solution. Overwriting files can sometimes lead to problems. It’s generally safer to delete your old files.

was that attitude? thats funny. Guess you needed a hug or something, right? Did I need to kiss your ass while I linked to you to different and more explanatory information? <– thats attitude, by the way.

Good luck getting any different of an answer. Dont hold your breath, and for God’s sake, dont actually click and or read any of the useful links I provided regarding WHY you delete files.

    Whooami,
    Touché!

    Jeremy,
Deleting files gave me a permission error, but I guess that confirms the fact that it’s with the server settings and not WP itself. We will try to resolve the issue with MT.

Overwriting vs. deleting is not a particularly big deal. Either works.

The problem is that some people who think they’re “overwriting” files are actually not doing that. I have no idea why, but this is a problem for a lot of inexperienced people trying to use FTP. Therefore we tend to recommend deleting first, just to be sure.

However, assuming you know what you’re doing, overwriting works just fine. That’s usually how I upgrade. ??

That said, if you can’t overwrite the files via FTP, then this is not WordPress’ problem. It can’t do anything to prevent overwriting. Only thing it could be is a permissions or file ownership problem.

but I guess that confirms the fact that it’s with the server settings and not WP itself

didnt I say that already? Who would think that 4 years experience actually amounts to any amount of useful knowledge. ??

    didnt I say that already?

What I wanted was a confirmation, not a random person bragging about 4 years mucking about with WordPress. Please go answer other threads and put your “useful knowledge” to use.

Now youre just trying to piss me off.

first, Im not a random person, any more than anyone else on this PUBLIC forum is random.

    Second, I dont muck.

Third, I wasnt bragging — I was stating a fact. The fact that someone knows more than you doesnt mean theyre bragging — Its called speaking from experience. I wonder what this place would be like if all the people that have any decent amount of experience just stopped answering posts like yours. hah!

And that, btw, is WHY you come here. Or did you want someone who JUST installed WP to give a completely different answer?

I WAS respectful to you — Im not going to kiss your ass, or hold your hand. You got the right advice, AND were politely called on the linking to the codex with ANOTHER link. I could have just as easily had tacked on “you were owned” to that post — IF i really wanted to display attitude.

Youre an idiot. This thread was a nobrainer.. you had your answer in the second post and all youve done since is make my blood pressure go up

    This is not productive. Closing.
