Problem with Meta Description length

I am having this problem on a couple of pages where it states that the meta description is too long at over 3000 characters. Looking in the field it was empty so I understood that I didn’t manually enter it, but it still says I have over 3000 characters. I therefore entered the meta description in the empty box and the characters used were added to the total of over 3000 characters.

I then opened a new page as a test page [draft] and typed in the meta description and all was fine. I saved the changes then added the title to the page and the characters in the meta description box went higher.

I went back to the original page and right clicked on it then viewed the source but there were over 2900 lines of code and as I don’t really understand or use coding I searched for the meta description code but all I got in the search box was 2 zero’s.

So how can I stop all of my pages “text” characters being added to the length of the meta description.
