problem with elegantWhite theme

Hey folks

I’m trying to remove the header image and the menu option from a landing page I’m trying to create, but not a single line of code I apply sticks. I would really love some help. I don’t know if I’m just not placing the lines in the right place or what the problem is, but it doesn’t seem to do a single thing, and I can’t find a single WordPress plug in that can offer a solution.
