Problem With Changing Permalinks

i have a problem when i try to change the permalinks wordpress gives me a blank page this has only happened with the 3.4 and 3.4.1 updates older versions still work (the server config and site install location are the same for both versions). If the permalinks get set in earlier versions of wordpress than 3.4 and then you upgrade they still work.
