What I did is get rid of the email notification wordpress uses by default. I have set up a mailgun account (free up to 10k emails / month) as my default WP and Forms email sender. You can read more on how to set up mailgun with WP here.

After several weeks of testing, I have found that with Mailgun I can get a performance that any shared server or VPS cant give me, so I recommend it as a must for any heavy form dependent WP site for managing all email notifications (to users and admins). It has an excellent log of emails sent in which you can check at a glance everything outgoing from your site. Also, my forms are now being submitted nearly instantly (less than a second).
