How to set up the plugin on nginx server.

Hi,
I have my localhost site setup on nginx server and have created a virtual host for the same.
When I try to access : https://wpclifford.localhost.com/wp-json/wp/v2/posts
I get this message: The connection was reset
The wordpress writes the permalink settings in htaccess file. The nginx server does not uses htaccess file.
Kindly guide me how can I get the plugin working.
