• With a custom permalink structure of /%category%/%postname%/ and category base left at the default blank, then you can access the first page of the category without including the category base.

E.g. On a fresh installation, 2015 theme with above permalink structure, accessing /uncategorised/ will display the first page worth of posts in the ‘uncategorised’ category. If you have over 10 posts in this category, the link to page 2 ( /uncategorised/page/2/ ) will return a 404 error.

What should happen (IMO) is that accessing the category without the category base should either return a 404 or do a 302 redirect to the category with the category base ( /category/uncategorised/ ).

As far as I’m aware, WordPress does not generate any links to the category without the category base, so clearly this is a very minor issue. But it would still make sense to correct this behaviour (unless there is some reason for it?)
