Problem using the <–more—> Quicktag

I’m trying to split up a long post so that midway through there will be a <—more—> link to the rest of the post. I click on the More icon in the post entry panel and I see what looks like an insertion. However, when I view the page it doesn’t work. The HTML code looks like this:
