problem updating – could not remove the old plugin

have the 2.0.40 ver of NextGen Gallery – I’m unable to update the plugin (get an error message saying “could not remove the old plugin”)
I’ve also tried to delete the plugin via ftp – It won’t delete even tho the permissions are set to 755
I’m not using this plugin on this site – can you help me to please remove?
