So I followed the instructions on the page here and got the expected email. However when I tried to reply I get an “Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender”.

    The error message reads :–

    ‘<wp-forums-request@lists.automattic.com>: host
    lists.automattic.com[66.155.40.237] said: 550 5.1.1
    <wp-forums-request@lists.automattic.com>: Recipient address rejected: User
unknown in local recipient table (in reply to RCPT TO command)’

now is this is case of n00bException or is there actually an issue at your end?

Thanks in advance for your response.

  • The list itself is working just fine. Not sure what could have caused this. Can you try again?

I am assuming that the unknown user is “wp-forums-request” and isn’t something I’m doing at my end?

I’ve just tried joining using another email address and got the confirmation email almost instantly.

I have just tried another email address also and get the same problem as previously. From your comment above I think we might be talking at slightly cross purposes. So just to clarify the chain of events is as follows:-

    1. I subscribe through the wp-lists web page.
    2. I get the email saying that a request has been accepted and that I need to reply with the confirmation code in the subject line.
    3. I hit the reply and then send button.
    4. I immediately get an email back saying the mail could not be delivered, with error messages as stated above.

The error messages seem to suggest that wp-forums-requests address is not known? However is this simply a mechanism in place to stop spam? Does the request actually get processed automagically behind the scenes?

Ah! I stopped at the confirmation email. Testing the confirmation now…

Yep – got a bounce. I’ll ask for this to be checked out asap. In the meantime, can you use the web link to confirm your subscription?

cool the weblink in the email worked like a charm. Why I just didn’t use that when I got the bounce I do not know! doh! Too much coffee and not enough sleep ;-).

Anyway thanks a lot for your help.
