I am creating a new post, but every time I try to save it, it deletes the last section of the post, several paragraphs. It’s the strangest thing. I keep re pasting the text in, but it cuts off every time.

Any ideas of what’s happening here, and how to fix it?

  • I’m not sure if it is the same problem as yours, but I recently could not get my changes for a Page to save (Update button), no matter what I did. The Update button appeared to work normally. But, when the edit window was refreshed, the changes were gone.

In my case, I flushed the cache on my Firefox browser, and things returned to normal.

As I say, not sure if this is your problem. If it is, it can take more than emptying the browser’s cache of Internet pages. With other problems like this, I have occasionally had to not just restart my browser, but reboot my computer.

Hello and thanks for responding to my post.

I’ve tried everything you mentioned, and unfortunately nothing has fixed the problem.

I’ve also tried creating a new post with a different title, several times, and I get the same problem. It cuts the post off every time. I did a word count on my post and the total number of words in the post is 1238, but it cuts it off after 1077.

What could be the problem here?

The number of characters in your Post (in HTML View) is a more useful number at this point. I’ve heard about problems “like this” that were traced to a bad database table column definition that restricted the length of an entry to a fixed number of characters (bytes).

I just used phpMyAdmin to check the defined type of column post_content in table wp_posts. Mine is longtext, which allows very large posts. What is yours?

    Hi again,

I just did a test post that had over 18,000 words in it, and it saved fine. then in the same post I selected and cut all that text and replace it with the text I’m trying to create my article with, from a text document, and I get the same error once again. It cuts the post off at the exact same line of text.

What the heck is going on??? I even tried to use plain text format to erase any formatting problems, I cleared the cache again, and still nothing is working…

I’m not sure what to advise without having the exact text you are trying to post. In its original file, just to be sure that no funny characters are lost. Yes, even Plain Text files can have hidden characters in them.

Otherwise, it is just wild guesses.

I’d then be trying to recreate your problem on a clean install of WordPress 3.0.1 with no plug-ins and the default theme. If it fails for me, I’d start by looking for invisible characters using an editor like NotePad++ with the display turned on for special characters, end of line, etc., and be looking right around the point the post stopped. I’d also be looking at the possibility of the whole post being one long “line” without any line breaks.

If it didn’t fail for me, then I’d get you to create a clean install of WordPress on the same web site (in another folder), and test it there. If it failed, then there is something about your host that is different from mine, and you’d probably have to talk to your host about that. If it worked, then it is a matter of determining what theme or plug-in is at fault.

At the end of some of these paths comes reporting the problem as a WordPress Bug.

Of course, I may have missed some possibilities.

If you are up to it, you are, of course, welcome to explore any of these paths yourself. You could, for example, setup an account on wordpress.com and try your post there.

Hi again. It’s all fixed ??

I tried your first suggestion of creating the article on a different install of wordpress and got the same error. Then I looked at the point where the text broke and there was a little icon there from a research citation I copied from the web. Took that out and problem gone.

Your help is very much appreciated!

I have this problem all the time on different blogs. I write a post and lose 90% of the post on save. Browser does not matter. It seems to be related to formatting in the post.

If I strip down the formatting I can usually get it to save.
