• hey everyone

i’m trying to install WP locally so i can edit the design without having to upload every change singularly via FTP.

I’m running XP Pro SP2, I’ve installed xampplite just like the tutorial at https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/xampp/ says, and it all goes well until I try loading https://localhost/xampp/splash.php using any browser. than it just lags and says “loading” until it times out.

what could be the problem? I’ve uninstalled IIS and restarted the pc a few times so there’s no clash. I really want to be done with this technical stuff so I can start focusing on design and content…

    thanks

    Ben

  • One of the orange ‘files’ in xampp is called ‘xampp-portcheck.exe’
    Does running that show anything?

thank u for the quick reply.

yes, it says ports 80 & 443 are used by apache.exe and 3306 is used by mysqld.exe (all in the xampp dir, of course).
    everything else appears as “free”.

    https://localhost/xampp/
    produces the same result?

Can you try with another browser?

I have an error log here:
    C:\Xampp\xampp\apache\logs
does yours have anything of note in it?

it does produce the same result.

This is what’s in the error log:

[Tue Apr 18 20:17:36 2006] [crit] (22)Invalid argument: unable to replace stderr with error_log
[Tue Apr 18 20:17:36 2006] [crit] (2)No such file or directory: unable to replace stderr with /dev/null

    [Code removed]

I can only suggest you post to the Xampp forums or you try downloading the full xampp installation.
