• When I use Gutenberg, there’s no problem creating links. But in Classic Editor, after I click the Insert/edit link button, the box that pops up to apply or edit a link flickers on mouseover.

This prevents a link being set. Even if I can enter the link manually and click to apply it, the link code is not added.

I have only noticed this on page that do not have a lot of content. When I add a few paragraphs of text, the problem goes away. Remove the text and the problem comes back.

Here’s a video of it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip3s5WIxH4g

You will see in the video that adding one paragraph of text didn’t help, but after I add two paragraphs of text there’s no problem adding links. Word count doesn’t seem to be the issue because I tested that. It just seems like you have to fill a certain amount of the editor.

The same problem also affects applying links to images.

This was done on a fresh WordPress install with only Really Simple SSL and Classic Editor plugins installed and active.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Uh, that seems like the old “showing of tooltip triggers the scroll event” bug resurfacing again ??

Can’t reproduce it here in WP 5.1/5.2 and in Firefox, Chrome and Edge. Could you give some more info please:

    1. What browser are you using?
    2. What is your WP version?
    3. Can you check the “Enable full-height editor and distraction-free functionality.” checkbox in Screen Options (top/right). Does this still happen?

    Hi Andrew,
    Thanks for your reply.

In the video you saw WordPress 5.1.1 and Google Chrome which is up to date.
I’ve tried editing in Edge and the problem does not happen there. I switch back to Chrome and the problem happens again.

I’ve reset Chrome, made sure add-ons have been disabled, cleared browser history and tried incognito mode. None of it made any difference.

I tried your “Enable full-height editor and distraction-free functionality” suggestion. When I enable or disable it the problem stops. However, if I leave the page and then come back to it, the problem reappears. It seems like it makes no difference if this option is on or off, it only fixes the problem temporarily.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this?

Still cannot reproduce it here, but pretty sure it is the same issue as the RTL bug in Chrome. When a tooltip is shown, it triggers the scroll event that temporarily hides the Add Link modal. That looks like a browser big. As there weren’t many reports, thinking this was happening only in rare cases, perhaps on certain locales or specific browser settings or addons.

Haven’t seen any new reports so assuming this has been fixed in Chrome.

Another new website and I’m getting this exact problem again. Surely I can’t be the only person?
