I would like to create a copy of my main site for sandbox purposes. My main site is at root level.

I followed all the instructions here (https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/wordpress/duplicate-wordpress-site-for-testing) but just to recap: I copied all the WP files off the FTP, then set up a new subfolder, then uploaded the files there.

I went to the main site via cPanel, exported the SQL database, created a new SQL database, imported it. I then manually went into the sandbox’s wp-config.php file and changed the references from the old SQL database/user to the new.

But when I visit the new URL, I just get a “page missing” error. (Yes, I made 100% sure for typos.) I also tried visiting the admin page, and also get a page missing error there.

I followed those instructions (linked above) accurately, but no go (and I tried this 3X now)…what am I doing wrong?

Ah, got it. I had to go into my wp_options table and manually update a few references of the old URL to the new URL — and now it started working. Thanks so much!

Did you do this manually or use one of the tools mentioned on that Codex page?. If it was the former, then you may not have changed all of the urls that need changing as they’ll be hidden inside serialized arrays.

I followed the instructions in the second point of “If You Forget to Change the Locations” (it has two points labeled as “1” and I followed the second, which should be labeled “2”). The way it’s worded, it seems to imply that that’s all it takes, and sure enough, I can use and login to the sandbox site now.

I really don’t need to update every URL across the sandbox site. I won’t be adding/modifying any content to this sandbox site. I’m purely using it as staging grounds for testing CSS changes or occasional plug-in swaps. I’m using a duplicate database purely as a precaution so that I never alter something on the live site accidentally.

Please let me know if I’m mistaken about any of this, as I’m still learning.
