Hi, I am trying to set up a new site for a client on her existing domain. She provided her hosting login info and I have successfully logged in to the host control panel. It is a small host and the panel appears quite primitive to me (though I have only seen a handful of control panels at this point).

My problem is that after finding my way to updating the version of PHP to the correct version, and finding where to add the database, I get the message “You must first enable Windows services”. My client has asked her tech support to work with me but they have not been helpful. After my inquiry to them about setting up a database and the Windows message and how to enable the services, they sent me their help guide. The help guide is no help either and is leading me down a path of unknowns and more questions.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of message? Is there some simple way to get this database added without making it my life’s work? Any help is much appreciated.

  • Do you know if the message relates to the MySQL service?

Is this link any help: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/windows-start-service.html

Yes. When trying to add through MSSQL Manager, I get this message:
Windows Services (ASP, ASP.net, ColdFusion 5, ColdFusion MX) are not enabled for your domain. To continue managing your MSSQL database please enable Windows Services.

Thanks for your link, but the information there is over my head. Do you think this is what I need to learn in order to install the db?! Will this host’s peculiarities be a problem for the site down the road?

What I have just discovered is that this Windows Enabled Service is an add-on to the domain package. I am going to pass that job onto the client to determine whether it is worthwhile or if a switch to another host would be more appropriate. Thanks for your help.

This may just be me catching up late, but natively WP expects to be working with MySQL not MSSQL. It can be done but it involves some extra steps which you can view here if you haven’t already:

Thanks for this. I didn’t realize that difference until you pointed it out. I am hoping I don’t have to go through all these extra steps. I love WordPress because of its ease of installation and use.
