Private post status

I bet it’s somewhere in the docs, I did a search on post status, but I didn’t see it.

When a posting, in this case for a page, is marked private, what does that mean? Does that mean that only the author can see it? or does it mean it won’t end up in the engines? I’d like to make a subpage and directly link to it, via my about me page. But I don’t want it to appear at the buttons on the top. I just want people to able to click the link and be taken to it. Also, I’d like to keep it out of the Indexing bots. Can I do all that?
