Can Private Content restriction shortcodes, as applied in a post, restrict the post in the same way when using an email subscriber type plugin so that the ‘raw’ unprotected text is also restricted? A user on my blog asked if I have a way to email new posts, comments, etc., such as subscribe2, and I hesitate to use one because when tested, posts with PC shortcode restrictions do not maintain the restriction when emailed out.

Not sure if this is possible. Just thought I’d ask before answering my user.

    Hey Songiuno,
I’m not sure if I have correctly understood your needs. Do you want to hide all the content of a post when a subscriber type plugin sends the post content by email to a subscriber? If so, I think that such a plugin should have an option to send the post title along with the post content or without the post content. Let me know, because I think I haven’t got the point! ??

Hi Aldo, what I was wondering is for the content of the post, when Private Content is applied to hide certain portions of it, to go out in email via a subscriber plugin in the same way the ‘hidden’ format is intended. For instance, I publish a post:

    Good morning everybody, [private container=”span” role=”custom” custom_role=”subscriber” alt=”It is rainy today”]it is a bright sunny day[/private].

I’d like the subscriber plugin email sent to subscribed users to read ‘Good morning everybody, it is rainy today.’ Or if no alt text specified, it would come out as ‘Good morning everybody, .’ as Private Content would treat it.

And users would have to login to my blog to read the protected post as a subscriber.

The subscriber plugin I’m looking at using (subscribe2) does have an option to send either the entire post or a specified excerpt of it. In testing, choosing entire post does so with the intended hidden/protected text intact as if Private Contnet shortcode was never applied. I would like to send entire post text BUT sent according to what Private Content shortcode allows/restricts.

Sorry Aldo, not sure if this is even possible. I’m just brainstorming again of things to accomplish. Hope this makes more sense.

That depends on the plugin that manages the subscribers via email. Which type of text that plugin will email? The raw text as saved in the database or the processed text? The plugin should send the latter, as seen in the frontend of your site. When I say “processed text”, I mean the text with shortcodes applied. Since you’ve made some tests, tell me which type of text the plugin sends out.

But there’s another aspect. When the subscribers plugin sends an email, it should know if Alice (an hypothetical user) is a Subscriber or an Editor or another role. Does the plugin have access to this information? If not, it can’t determine what to do with the Private Content shortcode, i.e. if it should send the private text or the “alt” text.

Evidently the subscribers plugin emails the raw text since the text sent doesn’t indicate that the PC shortcode was applied at all.

My intent and in the tests I did, is to post the text in WP with no role restrictions at the post level, so visitors can view. Within that text I would restrict certain portions to subscriber role view using Private Content shortcode. The subscriber plugin does not recognize the shortcode. If I publish the post as a whole as restricted to subscriber role, then the subscription plugin does recognize the role restriction and sends the email only to subscriber role users.

    1) Did you try using a WordPress standard shortcode in order to see if the Subscribe2 plugin executes that shortcode? A shortcode like [gallery id="123" size="medium"].

    2) When you publish a post as entirely restricted to subscriber role, do you use the Private Content shortcode [private <options>]Entire post[/private] or something else?

    Testing:
    1) the Subscribe2 plugin executes WP standard shortcode as you mentioned, using media gallery [gallery ids="2510,2511,2512,2513"]. The gallery images executed.

    2) My mistake on initial testing for entire post. I tested email output between public and private visibility earlier (private visibility as opposed to shortcode to restrict the entire plugin) which worked in restricting. The entire post restriction plugin I use is User Access Manager v2.2.1, which hides the entire post, title and text. Subscribe2 does not execute its restriction either. PC shortcode is not executed in email whether I restricted all of the post’s text or portions of it.

So it appears that built-in WP shortcode functions fine with the subscribe2 plugin email, but add-on plugin shortcode does not.

I will find another way to accomplish what I’m looking for. I’m realizing that I am taking you well beyond the scope of your Private Content plugin and don’t want to continue to do so. I enjoy and appreciate Private Content plugin!

Okay, I think you need a plugin for a complete management of subscribers.

Thanks for your posts here. ??
