I have a problem on my websites where the primary category for posts is not being displayed as the primary category. I select multiple categories and choose one of them as the primary category, which should be displayed on the website. Instead, a different category is being displayed. I have noticed that it always defaults to the first category alphabetically. Can someone help me with this?

    Hello @zehirlioglu,

Thanks for using the Yoast SEO plugin. I’m sorry that the primary category you choose isn’t reflected. To understand the issue better, please provide an affected URL and a screenshot of the sidebar that shows the categories selected.

You can use any image-sharing service like https://pasteboard.co/, https://snag.gy/, https://imgur.com/, https://snipboard.io/, or even upload the screenshot to your own website. Once you upload it to an image-sharing service, please share the link to the image here.

@zehirlioglu, Thanks for sharing the screenshot but sadly, it’s not legible for me. Can you take a clearer screenshot and reshare? Thanks

I have made a video about it for you, I hope you understand it and see it better. As soon as I select several categories, the primary category is not displayed, but rather the first in the alphabet, in this case A.

Thanks for the helpful screencast. However, Yoast SEO isn’t responsible for how the category is displayed in the front end; that’s a feature of your theme. A major advantage of the make primary category feature is to ensure that your?permalinks?and breadcrumbs remain clean. So when you set a specific category as the primary, that is reflected in the post URL/permalink.

However, I can’t confirm that due to your permalink structure as it excludes the %category% and uses only the %postname%.

So, can you temporarily switch to a default WordPress theme, such as Twenty-three, using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin to check the category in the front end? This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.

Do let us know how it goes.
