Previous Entries Getting Lost on my Blog?

  • Hi all! Here’s my site:

    My question is one of navigational obviousness. As you scroll down to the bottom, I’m wondering if the link to “Older Animations” is getting lost. Will people see it? I’ve had one or two comments where people kinda just didn’t see it. I’m assuming because they’re just not reading, and instead looking at pictures.

    Since this is the default setup out of Kubrick (Previous Entries), I’m wondering if other people had a similiar experience? And do you reccomend a solution?

  • If the link is there (and it is, I just checked your site), you can make it bigger. Just add the following code to your CSS:

    .navigation { font-size: x-large; }

    x-large might be too big, if so just put large.

    Well you’re definitely getting into a design & presentation area. A users eye will always be drawn to that that attracts attention – usually content (as it should!). In order to make that link stand out you can think about several strategies.

    1) Iconifying those links
    2) Altering your layout to make an “Older Animations” section more prominent (clickable image perhaps?)

    This is always a challenge for bloggers looking to keep older content relevant and one that I am continually grappling with. I don’t know how much content you have, but something that has worked well for me is to put a timecapsule between post 1 and 2 on the front page (see https://technosailor.com for demonstration). The timecapsule pulls in all posts from one year ago today. Of course, that’s MY implementation. Yours could (and probably would) be different.

    Another way to keep your older posts relevant is to use tagging and/or related posts plugins to keep that stuff in front of your readers.

    Some thoughts I have. There are bound to be other solutions if you’re willing to think outside of the box.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys. I ended up changing the text to say “More Animatios” instead of “Older”. Older has a negative connotation to it, I think, and since this isn’t really a typical blog (in that it’s more of a portfolio arranged in blog format), time and dates aren’t as important.

    I then emboldened it, and moved it to the right. I thought with all the text left-justified, having the link also aligned to left was contributing to it getting lost.

    I agree. Abrazell, that making it a graphic would call it out another notch. And I have no idea why I don’t go and do that ?? I guess something about it says “graphic buttons don’t go with your design” to me. I’m sure I could come up with something that would be tasteful, yet still pop out. I think I’ll wait til this current method plays out, and see what the consensus is.
