This is actually a lot easier than it used to be!

You can do this by installing the new theme on your site, then going to the ‘Appearance’ page in the admin area. When you hover your mouse pointer over the new theme, you’ll se a button that says ‘Live Preview’. Click on that and you’ll see your site with the new theme, without affecting your existing site.

It’s not foolish at all. I only learnt about that a short time ago myself, as it’s really not something that gets a lot of use most of the time.
