When the Media Deduper plugin (both free and Pro) compares two images, it calculates an MD5 hash of each file, and if the hashes are identical, the images are considered identical. That means that two copies of the same photograph saved in different formats or different sizes will not be considered identical.
Neither the free nor the Pro version of Media Deduper can currently detect whether images are visually identical at this time, only whether the files themselves are identical.
