Hi Fred,
When you manually set “follow” or “nofollow” in the page SEO settings (under Visibility), this message will trigger. This is to indicate you manually set (override) the option via the “page SEO meta input” (our meta box).
The words “meta” and “input” are used throughout Google, WordPress, and the web, and they all have slightly different meanings, which explains why this can be confusing. I’m not sure how to word this message differently. Perhaps I should use “page’s SEO settings” instead.
In any case, the first line of the tooltip is what truly matters; for “Link Following,” it is any of these:
- “Following: Page links may not be followed.” (follow is active)
- “Following: Page links may not be followed.” (nofollow is active)
- “Following: Page is invisible.” (page is a draft)
Everything after the first line explains how it came to that state. The last line, “The page SEO meta input overrides the link following state,” indicates that you engaged a manual override, overriding any assertion above it.
If you do not want to use an override, you should set the option back to “Default (follow)” or “Default (nofollow)”.
Everything above also counts for the Robots Meta Settings “Indexing” and “Archiving.”
I hope this makes more sense now. Let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers!
