I installed WordPress on my domain and started off using the default ugly URLs (domain.com/?p=70). I created some posts and some pages and realized that the pretty URLs (domain.com/2009/04/my-blog-post/) were the way to go and changed my settings to use them.

The problem is that I have a page called “contact” and when WordPress tried to create the domain.com/contact URL it apparently failed because there had been a directory called ‘contact.’ Even though that directory is gone, domain.com/contact throws a 404 (and not even the WordPress 404 page but my ISP’s default 404 page).

How do I get that URL to work?

  • Was the .htaccess file properly overwritten? Did you try again after emptying cache and reloading? Your own 404 page will load as soon as pretty urls work properly..

    Hi Rhand

I think the .htaccess file is working OK, as other pretty URLs are working just fine…it’s just that one. I get the WordPress 404 page for every incorrect URL. It’s only that one page that throws the ISP’s page.

Maybe you should check the link to contact in the Dashboard>Pages>Edit>Page>Permalink . Maybe you need to update/edit it..

Well, I finally found the problem. There was a contact.php file in the root directory. When I renamed it, the problem went away.

    Thanks for the replies, Rhand!
